During this month of hot weather, it is maybe the best time to just chill home with a fan on and watch some movies. Hopefully, we got the right thing to do just that and still improve your Dutch! Here is a selection of amazing short-films from the Netherlands and Belgium. Even if the Low Countries' film industry is not as large as in other places, those movies are certainly worth your time!
1. Ik Kan Vliegen (I Can Fly)
By Ruwan Heggelman
Produced by Portal Pictures
This comic-romantic film tells the story of Sven (Josha Stradowski) and Lisa (Frieda Barnhard), who meet in the city's nightlife. Lisa is on her way to the station but is tempted by Sven to jump on his back so he can prove that he can fly. Then the story takes an unexpected turn.
2. Happy New Year
Starring Tine Cartuyvels, George Tsachouridis, Freek den Hartogh
Written and directed by Brandon Grƶtzinger & Wander Theunis
On the last day of the year, a dispirited work-at-home phone interpreter has her life turned upside down when she answers an unexpected emergency call.
(I would like to note that around five languages are spoken throughout the film, mainly Dutch and Greek... So don't worry, your Dutch is not that bad ;))
3. Fundament
A film by Wilbrand (Wilbert van Veldhuizen) Music by Floris Kruger. Sounddesign by Filip DegernƤs.
Project for fun without official funding.
A young woman drives an old car along a coastal road towards a village. There is a man in the passenger seat, contemplating. Planning to shape the future of the village, as well as his own. A stylized 3D animation that switches seamlessly from realistic overture to mysterious fantasy. No dialogue, but isn't this a gem!
4. SKOGAFOSS
Directed by Niels Bourgonje
While on a trip with his girlfirend in Iceland, near the Skógafoss falls, Gijs receives a phone call from his mother that reveals her troubled mental state.
5. Het Eindhalte
A film by Edson Da Conceicao
Mo, a bitter young man, steps into the subway on a busy morning, wearing a bomb vest. On his way to Central Station, he meets the old man Khalid. Khalid starts a conversation that will change Moās life forever.
