As Moederdag approaches, we anticipate the traditional gifts of handmade crafts from our children – perhaps a flower, a kitchen utensil, or a heart-shaped creation, lovingly assembled with an abundance of glue and brimming with heartfelt intentions. If we're fortunate, we'll be treated to breakfast in bed, accompanied by the inevitable aftermath of a messy kitchen to attend to.

Mother's Day, at its core, is a celebration that honors the matriarch of the family, acknowledging the profound essence of motherhood, the enduring maternal bonds, and the indispensable role of mothers in society. Yet, it's one of those occasions that prompts reflection on whether such dedicated days should even be necessary. Much like Animal Day, shouldn't every day be an opportunity to cherish and care for both our faithful four-legged companions and the nurturing figures in our lives?

The origin of Mother's Day traces back to the vision of American Anne Jarvis (1864-1948), who sought to pay tribute to mothers quietly sacrificing themselves in service to their families and communities, especially on the anniversary of her own mother's passing. Remarkably, the essence of this commemoration remains unchanged over the years. Just last week, Dutch news highlighted a concerning trend: alongside the well-documented wage gap between genders, there's also a troubling disparity in pension funds, largely attributed to the decision of many women to prioritize caregiving responsibilities, including raising children.

So, if you find yourself pondering the perfect Mother's Day gift, perhaps consider something beyond the traditional trinkets. In a world where financial security is paramount, consider some investments in stocks, bonds, gold, or even cryptocurrencies.
